Lens blanks are the circular pieces of material left behind after shaping a pair of spectacles on sunglasses. They pose a huge problem within our industry and contribute to the whopping 80% of material that is estimated to become waste in each production run, and currently, outside of 3D printing eyewear (which comes with it’s own downfalls) there are very few solutions to this problem.

Last year, in our partnership with Central Saint Martin’s Product Design 3rd years, we asked students to rethink acetate waste in eyewear. BioOttica, designed by Maral Al-Sabah, was a project we loved for its simplicity - transforming lens blanks into a functional, decorative and protective spectacle case.

Creative projects such as this one inspire a way of thinking that puts resourcefulness and craft first, transforming waste into a new, artisan product and potentially creating new work opportunities for makers.

It was so great to work with the CSM students and we have no doubt they’ll go on to achieve great things.
