Spark by Studio Roosegaarde - A Sustainable Firework Alternative
The 5th of November marks the anniversary of the 1605 Gunpowder plot. With firework displays and festivities, it’s a celebration loved by children and many adults alike, but what often gets over looked is the environmental impact of these displays.
Fireworks are a cocktail of potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulphur mixed other varying metals and minerals to create chemical reactions that give them their colours.
Sadly, the aftermath or the these beautiful displays is a polluting haze.
Dutch Designer Daan Roosegarde of Studio Roosegarde felt there was a better way…
SPARK is a stunning alternative to fireworks in the form of an organic travelling light installation.
Merging design and technology, thousands of light sparks made from biodegradable materials come together to make a 50 x 30 x 50 metre cloud that gently floats on the wind, creating unique and unpredictable patterns of light across the sky.
Completely natural, yet ethereal to watch, SPARK was inspired by fireflies, birds and the stars above.
FORWARD THINKING
Fireworks are a core element of important celebrations all around the globe - celebrations that bring joy to so many.
And we don’t want to that to change, but it is inspiring to see how these sustainable alternatives are being developed, and how one day, they could be introduced on a mass-scale.
