Its all too easy to break a pair of glasses. Squashing, dropping or smashing can happen no matter how careful you are. Whilst we design our eyewear to be as resistant to breakage as possible, we know accidents happen. This is why all of our frames are repairable, using traditional design features to extend the lifespan of your frames and save them from landfill.

When it comes to spotting quality eyewear, designed with longevity and repairability in mind, there are two key things to look out for.

First is traditional riveted hinges, the traditional fastening method for eyewear, dating back hundreds of years. Second is mineral glass sun lenses. Both of which are used at MONC.

These two features were once considered industry standard, but as throw-away fast fashion culture becomes more prevalent, cheaper and more temporary alternatives such as plastic sun lenses and injection hinges were introduced.

What’s the difference?

An injection hinge is glued or melted into the frame, which means if it breaks, it cannot be repaired. Meanwhile, plastic sun lenses are easily scratched and more difficult to recycle, unlike mineral glass lenses. By choosing to use traditional riveted hinges and mineral glass sun lenses we are ensuring better longevity for our eyewear.

Once the frame you love breaks, there’s nothing worse than having to replace it entirely from scratch, or not being able to find a replacement at all. Since we have frames that survive some wear and tear, we’re in the process of developing a repairs program. A service that MONC wearers can engage with, we’re using our Repair Cart to gauge the demand and expectations of this service. On the cart, we’ll be able to:

Polish frames: to get rid of any scratches or scuffs

Reshape: fitting the frame to your face

Hinge tightening: stopping floppy or loose temples

We’re excited to launch this program, but in the meantime any damage to your MONC frames will receive the same care and attention as always. In fact, if you see us out with our repair cart, we’re offering free repairs to anyone who completes our survey.
